My Prayer Strategy #4 - "Shoes of Peace"

Father, the word says in John 16:33 that we "will have trouble", but it also says that you "have overcome the world."

I want to be like the eagle that uses the elements of the storm to lift them up higher.  I want to benefit from the storms that blow through my life.  I know that storms do pass, and while in it, it can be fierce - lots of wind, lots of debrie blowing around. Keep me steady in it with a peace that only you can give.  Help me to be locked into your peace.  Something in this storm is making me to be what you want me to become.

The enemy wants me unhinged, but with your peace, I will survive and thrive.  I will position myself in your peace.

The enemy has come to kill, to steal and destroy, but you have come to give life (John 10) and more abundant life.  Let my peace stand firm in you knowing that I have peace with you and I have the gift of peace.  Peace that you give, peace that you have left for me so my heart wouldn't be troubled.

Your peace:
  • gives me a firm grip
  • gives me a stability
  • allows me to keep my footing
  • will keep me sane
Philipians 4:6-7 says this:

"Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.  Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all he has done.  Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.  His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus."

Father, help me to not be anxious but to pray.  Make my requests known and be thankful.  My thankfulness will activate peace.

I want calmness of my soul in the midst of life.

Your peace will keep me focused and moving in the right direction. I want to remember that the gospel of peace is the Good News that the separation doesn't exist anymore with You, but Christ bridged that gap at the cross.

Let your peace help me to also move forward, to take ground, to take back everything the enemy has stolen.

Help me to advance against the enemy and tear down strongholds in prayer and with your word.

Amen

My Prayer Strategy #3 - Breastplate of Righteousness

Sharing with you my prayer strategy for the "Breastplate of Righteousness" from the Armor of God study the Girlfriend's of Faith did a few years back.

I encourage you again to write out prayer strategies for areas of your life: marriage, children (individually), work, neighbors, health etc.  It's a great way to have focus in prayer.  Buy a spiral notebook and begin to write them out today.

Today, Father, I put on righteousness according to Ephesians 6:14b "...and having put on the breastplate of righteousness."

The price of my breastplate was covered at the cross - imputed righteousnesss.  I am righteous because of you Father.

I don't need to purchase my own protection, my own righteousness. It was freely given to me according to Ephesians 5:2b: "...and gave Himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God."

I want to be an imitator of you O God "Therefore, be imitators of God, as beloved children and walk in love, as Christ loved us..." Ephesians 5:1-2a.

I want to walk in love just as you loved me and gave yourself up for me.  I'm no longer a slave to my flesh, to sin, to unrighteousness.

Thank you for imputed righteousness.  Help guard my heart, affirm truth and align myself to you.  Help me to live out of my spiritual heart, so I can keep truth and align myself to right-side-up living.

Right living will deflect the enemy's darts.  Help me O God to let go of perfectionism - trying to be good on my own and in my own strength.  Scripture says "there is none righteous, no, not one." Romans 3:10.

I'm asking you today Father to help me not try and seek my own righteousness but to understand yours.  I subject myself today to your righteousness that protects my heart.

I let go of striving to do everything perfect, not to chase perfectionism, not to compare myself, but to chase you O God.

I need your help to put off and put on.  I need the Holy Spirit to change me, sanctify me and be my helper to practice right-side-up living.

I will cooperate with the Holy Spirit to make the necessary changes and to cut and prune me.

I will focus on cultivating health and wellness in Christ.

  • I am righteous
  • I am a child of God
Amen!

My prayer strategy #2 for the Belt of Truth from the "Armor of God" study:

Father, I need a strong core of truth.  I need stability and to not be injured in this battle nor cave to pressure.

Help me Father according to Ephesians 6:13-14 "therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth...."

Help me to stand firm when difficult times come.  Help me to resist caving into my emotions and fears, to be stable in your Word, so I don't fall.

Father, I don't want to be deceived by my emotions, by shades of reality.  I want to know your Word which is the true reality; to know it at my core; know that truth is your opinion; to live like your Word is the truth.

I want your truth, your word to be bound on my hands and forehead.

Like Moses, I want to know your ways not just what you can do or who you are.

Father God, I want to honor you, give thanks to you and have an erect posture that gets stronger each day through prayer and the Word.

Help me to not allow offenses to fester, to forgive quickly.

I will remember Ephesians 4:21 that the "truth is in Jesus". I will remember Psalm 119:160 that "the sum of your word is truth".

I want to advance forward - to "be before I do".

Expose things in me to the light like Ephesians 5:13 says "all things become visible when exposed to the light" and Ephesians 5:8 "for once I was full of darkness, but now I have light from the Lord".

So, Sharon, live as a person of light.  Freedom will come to me when I discover the truth in Christ and in His Word.

Help me walk in your truth, abide in your truth.  Order my steps Lord.  I want to be transparent, not hiding anything from you.

Your Word never changes!

I want to be guided with truth!

Protected by truth!

Amen

My Prayer Strategy #1 from the Armor of God Series

In the "Armor of God" study, Priscilla Shirer asks us to write prayer strategies taken from our "Actionable Intel" after each five days of homework during the week.  I'm sharing with you my first personalized prayer strategy to give you an example/idea.  Of course, your "Actionable Intel" will differ from mine when you write your prayer strategies.

(taken from my 2015 journal)

Father, I want my passion for you to return.  Passion to pray. Passion to read and mediate on your Word.  Passion for the lost. Passion for Bible study.  Passion to pray for others.  Passion to see our world revived.  Passion for your return.

I give you my past and all its regrets.  I believe at times I see prayer as a chore and not a privilege.  I repent Father God.  There are times as well I feel guilty if I don't pray, times of frustration when I do pray because it overwhelms me.  There's so much to pray for, so much to focus on.  I need your help Lord.

I need the want to in putting my armor on every day and "with all praying" - pray.  I feel I've lost my cutting edge.  I want it back Lord.  I want to see prayer as a tool against the enemy, to have great faith and not lag behind.

Please, Lord, stir up the passion in me again.  Help me to realize that it's only you who can do this. On my own I am weak and cannot make this happen.  I need my desire to be divinely recovered.

So, Lord, I am reaching outward and upward to you.

I need the cutting edge of hope, faith and passionate confidence in you again.  Wind of God's Spirit blow on me again.

So:
  • Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me - Psalm 51:10.
You said this: (personalized the scriptures)
  • You will give me a heart to know you, for you are my Lord, and I will be your people.  You will be my God, for I will return to you with my whole heart. - Jeremiah 24:7
  • I will call upon you and come and pray to you, and you will listen to me.  I will seek you and I will find you when I search for you with all my heart - Jeremiah 29:12-13
  • Lord, you will circumcise my heart and the heart of my descendants to love you Lord my God with all my heart and with all my soul, so that I may live - Deut. 30:6
  • I will love you Lord my God with all my heart and with all my soul, and with all my mind and all my strength - Mark 12:30
  • You will give me a new heart and put a new spirit within me; you will remove my heart of stone and give me a heart of flesh - Ezekiel 36:26
I will thank you Lord for doing this in my life.  I am grateful for your faithfulness and your goodness. I am thankful for what you did to defeat the enemy and open the way to a new passionate, vibrant walk with you.  I am asking you in faith, believing that what I have asked is according to your will for me and what you desire to give to me.

I now expectantly wait to receive this promise of newness and freshness from your Spirit for:

  • You will come to me like the rain, like the spring rain, watering the earth - Hosea 6:3
Help me maintain the passion when it comes.

I praise you for it!  And I say yes to receiving and regaining my passion again!

Amen

Lisa's Story

The Beginning

My experiences with sin and rebellion against God and my parents began in high school.  Being raised in a strict Christian home with many rules and restrictions, I began seeking independence and freedom away from following rules in my senior year - away from the “Christian girl” choices of obedience.

Meeting a boy I liked very much, I became pregnant my last four months before graduation.  We stayed together for six years – working together and living together, until I became a very jealous and insecure person.

These infectious emotions stayed with me to haunt and destroy me as a person.  I was physically abused on several occasions only to find out he had cheated on me.  We were both very young and naïve.  I left the relationship and moved back home with my father and sister.

There, I would start over and begin my life as a single mom hoping to raise my son in a Christian environment.  I found myself back to the roots of Christianity.

Seeking For Love

After several years of growing in the Lord, I was still seeking a Christian man for love in all the wrong places.  I became naïve and gullible becoming interested in a Christian man, who was going to church, becoming friends with his mother and two sisters.  Little did I know I would fall back into temptation, and the thought of getting pregnant again never crossed my mind.

I repented every time we slept together.  He told me he was careful and not to worry.  Well, sure enough, after only a few months of dating, I was back at the doctor’s for regular checkups only to find out I was pregnant.

I stepped down from the choir, feeling shameful and embarrassed, but staying in church and continuing to serve the Lord.  Never did I imagine that he would leave me to take care of this child on my own.  He didn’t want to be a full-time dad.

Nine months later, I gave birth to a beautiful girl.  He did not want anything to do with her.  His words to me on the phone were “she’s not a boy”.  What?

At this point, I have faced both physical and emotional abuse.

On My Own

Raising two children, working two jobs and going to college off and on, I’m thankful I had my parents who supported me and helped me every step of the way.

My mom was a rock.  She never judged me or looked down on me.  She was always giving and loving.  This encouraged me to fight harder and stand on my own feet.

As the years went by, I began to attend a church in downtown Flint where my mother and step-father attended.  I sang specials in my new-found church enjoying every moment.  Singing was where I felt close to Jesus.  I felt healing and deliverance.  When I sang, all my pain, guilt and shame would just vanish and melt away.

After a year of attending my church, I was asked to be the praise and worship leader and begin a choir.  I accepted the position.  During this time, I had only a pianist, a guitarist and a drummer.  Needless to say, the drummer and I began seeing each other.

We began talking and hanging out.  I thought my life was coming to a completion thinking “could he be the one?” Deep down something didn’t feel right.  I ignored all the possible signs that the Holy Spirit was tugging on my “love strings”.  I went along with this man.  After finding out I was pregnant for the third time, he convinced me to leave this church and attend the church he was originally from.  I wanted to make things right and hopefully things would work out in my favor.

I left leading worship and directing the choir, which was God’s calling on my life, for a man I barely knew.  Once our son was born, we decided to move in together.  From then on my life was changed, and not for the better.

I decided to get on birth control to prevent another pregnancy.  What was I doing?  What was I thinking?  I was foolish and naïve.  Why does this word follow me with every decision I make?

Struggling Again

I struggled with jealously and insecurity with every relationship I was involved in.

During my pregnancy with our first, the physical abuse started.  This man that I only began to wish I could actually feel some form of love for thought he would handle my jealousy with abusive behavior.  I was choked to becoming unconscious on the kitchen floor, only to be coughing up blood.  At one visit to my brother and sister-in-law’s house, he pushed me down a flight of stairs while I was carrying his baby, but I stayed with him.

He repeatedly told me he was sorry and that it would never happen again.  There were nights he would leave and be gone for three days.  I had no clue what he was up to.  Jewelry, a microwave, and different items from the house were coming up missing. The neighbors were trying to tell me he was using drugs.  “No! Not him”, I thought.  I didn’t want to hear or believe this was going on.  He forced me to drive him into bad areas of Flint, only to tell me to stay in the car and wait for him.  I had my children in the car sitting in the roughest parts of Flint.  I was terrified; more terrified though if I left him there because of the beating I would receive.

We went together to counsel with our pastor.  Every time we met he was remorseful.  Later, I found out I was pregnant with our second child.  I thought “how could this happen? I was on birth control.”

During this pregnancy, the lying, cheating, stealing, controlling, manipulative and physical abuse escalated.

One afternoon, I was in the bedroom with my oldest daughter.  Pregnant with my last child, he came walking into the room yelling at me, grabbed chunks of my hair, forcing my face into the floor making my face hit the floor repeatedly.  Pieces of my hair were being pulled from my scalp and into the air.

My daughter witnessed the abuse.  I remember one evening my oldest son, who was no more than 10, helped me move all the furniture in front of the door to block this man from coming in.  We bolted and boarded the back door.  After several attempts of him begging and pleading to come in and apologize, I let him in, only for more abuse.

He did not allow me to have a telephone.  On one occasion, after I confronted him about having three numbers of one woman, I came near to death.  In front of my three children, he beat me and took his open fist and thrust the palm of his hand into my nose.  The force led me to the ground where I laid hearing him screaming at me.  I literally looked like a piece of pulverized meat.

After several of my family members, co-workers and his parents saw my face, they begged me to leave.  It was the doctor who told me if my nose would have shifted two more centimeters, I would not be alive.  I stayed.

Enough

What motivated me the most was the fact that my daughter was just born and I walked in on this man seeing him smoking crack.  He was, in fact, this whole time using drugs.

Enough!  No more abuse, no more lies, no more stealing, and no more defeat.  I was determined to get my four children and myself out of this dangerous, unhealthy and toxic stressful lifestyle.

With much humility and shame, I called my father, who was there for me.  He never stopped praying for me. It was only by the love and grace of God that today I am living and breathing.

I never once looked back or turned back for what had almost ended my life:  self-absorbed, naïve, gullible and looking for love in all the wrong places.  The only true love is that of the Father in heaven.  He brought me through this.  My struggle, my shame, my sins, my selfishness, only by the blood of Jesus I have been saved.

Another Chance

God gave me another chance to be a loving, nurturing and caring mother.  He led me straight back to Him.  I was in the lowest and weakest times that Jesus was reaching for me the whole time and I was rejecting Him.

He never let go of me.  He loved me all the way back to victory.  I live with a red mark on my nose, but it reminds me every day that Jesus loved me enough to spare my life, to help others.

My heart’s desire is to tell Christian women in this situation that there is hope.  You can’t turn back your life but you can control it.  Please get help.

"One in a Million" Session 3 notes

Twenty-one women studied together in our Session 3 class on Wednesday.  It was good to be back in class - seeing the women from previous studies, catching up on news and meeting new women for this study.

As always, I have the girls put their name in for a special give-away.  This session, Joanna Partridge won a leather-bound journal that I had purchased from Florida. Congrats Joanna!

In session 3, Priscilla Shirer started us off with a story about a train. She and her husband were put up in a hotel during one of their travels. They were exhausted and immediately went to bed to get some much-earned sleep.  To their dismay, a very loud train passed by their hotel window three times in the night.  Unfortunately, the next morning, they were sleep-deprived.  The host who put them up heard Priscilla's story about the train the next morning.  Her response: "We're so used to hearing the train that it doesn't phase us anymore. I'm so sorry."

Could it be for us in America, that we are so used to God on every side and the blessings of God, that when the "train of God's glory wants to fall in an unusual way, we don't recognize it anymore?"

Her question was this: "have we become desensitized to God's activity?"

She mentioned that "God is predictable in His character but He is completely unpredictable in His activity."  God cannot be put into a box.

In the theme verse from Exodus 13:17-18, we can see that God is unpredictable in the wilderness travel portion of our journey.

There are two questions asked about our own wilderness journey:

  • Why does God allow it?
  • What am I suppose to do to get through?
Exodus 14 gives us a portion of the answer to the "how" question:

"But Moses said to the people, "don't be afraid. Stand firm and see the LORD's salvation He will provide for you today; for the Egyptians you see today, you will never see again."

They must count on God to do what seems impossible.

If you are at an impossible situation in your life right now, there are 4 things that will help you determine how you can best face the impossible:
  • Be Fearless. Fear is natural.  They're facing the Red Sea, plus their enemy is coming up behind them.  With the Holy Spirit's power, we also do not have to be afraid.  "God sympathizes with us in our humanity, but in His deity, he can perform a miracle."  Fear used here in Hebrew, is a fear that results in paralysis.  Another derivative used in Deut. 5:5 is used as "what you are anticipating might happen."  The two greatest sicknesses are "what if" and "if only."  Read Philippians 4:6-7. We must not engage fear, give it attention, but exchange it for an opportunity to pray.
  • Be Still/Standby. Stand and still are two commands that might seem passive but actually are difficult to practice.  Standing requires our will, our mind and our body to be engaged.  It means partnering ourselves alongside God.  It means to look for God's activity. Still requires us to wait for God to do what He will do.  Priscilla said this: "the peace of God cannot hit a moving target."
  • Be Watchful. A person cannot be watchful when they are moving. While we are in the middle of our wilderness or facing an impossible situation, while the enemy is closing in, right now we need to open our eyes to see God's salvation.
  • Be Silent. This is the most difficult of the four commands.  The Israelites had a tendency to whine and complain.  Do we? When the Lord begins to fight for us, we need to guard ourselves against complaining.
As mentioned in the session, "the Israelites trusted in Him for their deliverance just not for their circumstance."

We were encouraged to take deliberate pauses throughout our day and say this:

"God, in this moment, would you give me an awareness of Your activity."

God is always active.

We said this statement at the end:

"My difficult circumstance is God's opportunity to perform a miracle in my life.  I trusted Him with my deliverance, now I will trust Him to get me to my destiny. I will be fearless, steadfast, keep my eyes open and.....shh....keep my mouth closed."

Verses used in Session 3:
Exodus 13:17-18.  I Peter 4:12. Exodus 14:13.  John 16:33.  Psalm 145:17-18. Philippians 4:6-7. Deuteronomy 5:5. Psalm 46:10. Ephesians 1:18.

Strategy 3: Your Identity: Remembering Who You Are

This strategy is compiled from chapter 3 in the book by Priscilla Shirer: "Fervent".

Has the enemy devalued your strength and magnified your insecurities lately?

Do you feel like your life is meaningless?

Don't let him get away with his lies one more day.  Arm yourself with truth.

You are alive and free, protected and empowered, fully equipped to stand and fight victoriously against him.

In what specific areas have you been brainwashed into believing you are weak and hopeless and have nothing of value to offer?

How has the accuser been messing with your mind?

If your defenses are down and your resolve is weak, it is likely his accusations have turned your focus back in on yourself instead of your wonderful Savior.

If all you can think of are your own imperfections, inadequacies and failures, you have forgotten that no matter what charges are legitimately made against you, they are no match for the powerful transformation that God is accomplishing in your salvation.

Get your nose in the Word, your knees on the floor and start living like who you are in Christ.  Satan is hoping you will never fully realize all the wonderful things that have been permanently credited to your account in order to keep you sidelined by guilt or sidetracked by trying to earn the things you already have.

It's time to pray strategically like Paul did.  It's time you fully realize the unlimited resources you have to live victoriously.

You are fully functional with weapons the enemy has no answer for.

You are loved by God, sealed by His Spirit, forgiven of all sin even the most shameful.  You are God's and God is yours.  You have access to every spiritual blessing in Christ.
